Why Scholarships?

As the costs of higher education continue to rise, decisions to continue education beyond high school become increasingly difficult to make and to finance, especially for those having moderate financial incomes. We want to be sure that any deserving resident graduate of South Western High School has both the encouragement and the opportunity for continued education.
Our role includes:

  • raising and managing funds
  • establishing scholarship criteria
  • selecting recipients and distributing awards
The Philip L. Hempfing Scholarship
This is the first “Named Scholarship” established by South Western Dollars for Scholars. The scholarship was established with memorial contributions received after Phil’s untimely death from cancer in early 1998. Each year a minimum of $750 in scholarship funds will be presented to a South Western High School Senior in honor of Philip L. Hempfing, a South Western graduate, former school board member, and district administrator. In addition to academic achievement, the recipient must demonstrate the values of a “true mustang” through contributions to school and community.
